Although he was not the "first publishers' binder" as he was sometimes credited, Benjamin Bradley was certainly the most successful bookbinding manufacturer in New England.
Before his death in 1862 he employed 120 workers and was turning out 3,000 books a day.

The Nag Hammadi Codices: Single Quire Bindings

The class made a small replica binding of one of the Nag Hammadi Codices, which date from the 4th century C.E., using a variety of materials, including paper, leather and papyrus. The class will studied the history of the find and learned about the structural variations among the 10 most intact extant covers.

All the sections, including a pop-up building were constructed by using dovetail and mortise and tenon paper joints. Thus paper fatigue is eliminated as well as the tendency for multiple folded units to ‘spring’ upwards. The book lies perfectly flat.
